Entebbe, on the shore of Lake Victoria, is home to Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's main gateway for international arrivals, while Kampala, about 40 km and routinely an hour to an hour and a half away depending on traffic, is the country's capital, largest city and the hub for road travel to almost everywhere else in Uganda. Nearly every safari that starts or ends by air passes through this pair of towns, which makes them less a destination in their own right and more the connective tissue of a Uganda trip.
Kampala itself is a busy, hilly city, with markets, cultural and historical sites such as the Kasubi Tombs, and a level of traffic that can make even short crossings of the city slow at peak times. Many visitors use it as a one-night stop to break up an arrival or departure, or as a base for the first leg of a road safari heading west or north.
Entebbe has a quieter, more lake-oriented character, and several activities cluster conveniently close to the airport.
