Wildlife and Game Drive Safaris

Wildlife and game-drive safaris are built around vehicle-based game viewing in Uganda's savanna parks, usually in early morning or late afternoon drives when animals are most active, combined with a boat cruise where the park has suitable water. This is the closest Uganda comes to the classic East African safari format, and it works well alongside gorilla or chimp trekking as a change of pace.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is the most visited of the three, known for Kazinga Channel boat cruises with dense concentrations of hippo and buffalo along the banks, and for the tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector. Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest park, with game drives across open savanna north of the Nile, boat trips upriver toward the base of the falls, and the falls themselves, where the Nile forces through a narrow gorge. Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda's smallest savanna park and the only one in western Uganda offering walking safaris and horseback safaris, alongside its resident zebra, impala and eland.

A typical wildlife safari itinerary allots at least two nights per park to allow for both a game drive and a boat cruise, since travel distances between parks in Uganda are considerable. Self-drive and guided options both work, though a guide familiar with each park's tracks and current wildlife movements generally improves sightings.
