Kasese and the Rwenzori Foothills

Kasese is a working town in western Uganda, sitting directly at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains and within roughly two hours of Queen Elizabeth National Park. That combination of a mountain range on one side and a major savanna park on the other is what makes it useful on an itinerary: few other towns in Uganda put a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range and one of the country's best-known wildlife parks within such easy reach of each other.

For most visitors, Kasese functions less as a destination in its own right and more as a base and logistics hub. It is where Rwenzori treks are organised, where porters and rangers are arranged through community-based guiding services, and where the Kilembe Trail begins its climb into the mountains. Travellers heading only to Queen Elizabeth often pass through or stay overnight here too, since the town sits on the road between the park and Fort Portal or Kampala.

Beyond its logistical role, Kasese has its own everyday character worth a short stop: local markets, a Rwenzururu cultural history tied to the surrounding Rwenzururu Kingdom, and views of the mountains that are often clearer from town, below the cloud line, than from higher up the trekking routes themselves. The surrounding region also holds a scattering of crater lakes, remnants of the same volcanic activity found further north near Fort Portal and Kibale.

Because it serves two very different draws, mountains and savanna, Kasese is best treated as a flexible base: a night or two before and after a Rwenzori trek, or a stopover for those splitting time between Queen Elizabeth's game drives and a shorter foothill hike rather than a full summit attempt.
