Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park, and its centrepiece is the Victoria Nile, which the entire river is forced through a gap in the rock only a few metres wide, forming Murchison Falls before opening out into a wide, slow stretch downstream. The contrast between the violence of the gorge and the calm water above and below it is part of what makes the falls worth the trip on their own.
The Nile splits the park roughly in two, and the northern bank holds the main game-viewing area, with savanna and woodland supporting giraffes, elephants, buffalo, lions and a range of antelope. The southern bank and the river itself are the focus of boat trips, which travel from the delta area up to the base of the falls past hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife, including the shoebill stork in the delta for visitors with time for a dedicated birding trip.
Murchison Falls is also a good base for combining several activities in one visit: a hike to the top of the falls complements the boat trip to the base, and Budongo Forest, just south of the park, adds chimpanzee tracking to an itinerary otherwise built around big game and river scenery.
Because of its size and the range of activities on offer, most visitors spend at least two nights here, often more if combining a full day of game drives with the river cruise and a forest walk in Budongo.
A Nile cruise from the Paraa area upstream to the base of the falls, passing large pods of hippos, basking crocodiles and dense birdlife along the banks. A separate, longer boat trip downstream into the Nile delta is the best way to look for the shoebill stork.
Savanna and woodland drives across the park's northern sector to look for giraffe, elephant, buffalo, lion and antelope, with the density of wildlife generally highest early morning and late afternoon.
A short guided walk to viewpoints at the top of the falls, close enough to feel the spray, to see the full volume of the Nile forced through a gap only a few metres wide before it drops into the gorge below.
A large natural forest just south of the park with a well-established habituated chimpanzee community, easily combined with a Murchison Falls itinerary as a half-day add-on.
A specialised boat trip into the papyrus-lined delta where the Victoria Nile meets Lake Albert, one of the more reliable places in Uganda to see the shoebill stork alongside other wetland birds.
Catch-and-release fishing trips on stretches of the river below the falls, mainly for Nile perch, arranged through park-registered operators.
The dry seasons, generally December to February and June to September, are the easiest for game viewing, with better road conditions on the park's tracks and animals gathering predictably near the river and other water sources. The wetter months of March to May and October to November bring greener scenery and fewer vehicles, though some inland tracks can be harder going.
Murchison Falls is reached by road from Kampala or Entebbe, around 4 to 6 hours (roughly 305 km via the Kichumbanyobo gate), with a ferry crossing of the Nile required to move between the northern and southern sections of the park. A domestic flight to an airstrip near Pakuba or Bugungu cuts the journey to under an hour and suits shorter trips or those combining Murchison with other parks by air.
