Murchison Falls National Park

The area described is Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP), which is indeed Uganda's largest and oldest conservation area, first gazetted in 1926 and later established as a national park in 1952, covering an expansive 3,893 square kilometers at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley. The park's star attraction is the phenomenal Murchison Falls, considered the world's most powerful waterfall, where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile river is dramatically squeezed through a narrow 7 meter-wide gorge before plunging 43 meters into the "Devil's Cauldron" below. This creates a thunderous roar and a spectacular rainbow mist, with the river then calming into a placid stream that sustains vast populations of hippos and Uganda's largest concentration of Nile crocodiles, which are best viewed on the renowned boat safaris to the base of the falls. The park's diverse habitats from open savanna and Borassus palms to riverine woodlands are home to 76 mammal species, including four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo), and notably protect nearly three-quarters of the world's Rothschild's giraffes. . MFNP is also a birdwatcher's paradise, hosting over 450 species, including the highly sought-after Shoebill stork near the Nile-Lake Albert Delta, making it an essential destination for a classic, diverse African safari.

Mount Elgon National Park

The park described is Mount Elgon National Park, which protects the majestic Mount Elgon, an immense, solitary extinct shield volcano situated on the border of Uganda and Kenya, with its highest peak, Wagagai, at 4,321 meters, being wholly within Uganda. Mount Elgon is famed for featuring the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, a collapsed crater spanning over 40 kilometers that visitors can trek across, adding a unique geological dimension to the park. The mountain's massif supports a variety of unique ecosystems, ranging from dense montane forest and bamboo zones to the high-altitude Afro-alpine moorland, which is home to unique endemic species, including giant groundsels and lobelias. Visitors to the park have a wealth of activities, including exploring vast, deep caves (like the Sipi and Kitum Caves), viewing stunning waterfalls (such as the Sipi Falls, though technically outside the park boundary, are the gateway), and visiting hot springs on the caldera floor. . Trekking up to the summit of Wagagai is a challenging multi-day hike that offers incredible scenery and a journey through these diverse climatic zones.
