Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park, situated in the remote Bundibugyo District, is a truly unique ecological jewel in Uganda, famously known as the easternmost extension of the vast Ituri Forest from the Congo Basin, making it the only tract of true lowland tropical rainforest in East Africa. This ancient forest has led to an unparalleled biodiversity, distinguishing the park as a must-visit for birders, with over 441 recorded bird species, including 46 Guinea-Congo Biome species such as the Nkulengu Rail and Piping Hornbill that are found nowhere else in the region. Furthermore, the park is celebrated for its geothermal wonders, featuring the spectacular Sempaya Hot Springs (Mumbuga and Nyansimbi), where the female spring, Nyansimbi, is an active geyser that spouts boiling water up to 2 meters high, allowing visitors to cook eggs and plantains as a demonstration of the powerful subterranean forces shaping the Albertine Rift Valley. Visitors also have the chance to see eight species of primates, including the Grey-cheeked Mangabey and the Central African Red Colobus, and can engage with the local Batwa pygmy community for a rich cultural experience.

Kibale National Park

The protected area described is Kibale National Park, often celebrated as the "Primate Capital of the World" and widely considered the best location in Africa for chimpanzee tracking due to its high concentration of primates. Located in western Uganda, this extensive area of moist evergreen forest and swamp supports one of the continent's largest populations of chimpanzees, with several communities habituated for visitor encounters, offering exceptional viewing opportunities. Beyond the famous chimps, Kibale is a true primate-lover's paradise, hosting a remarkable total of 13 primate species, which includes the endangered L'Hoest's monkey and the vibrant Red Colobus monkey, alongside species like the Blue monkey, Grey-cheeked Mangabey, and Bushbaby. The successful chimpanzee tracking program and the sheer diversity of its resident primates make Kibale an indispensable highlight for ecotourism in Uganda.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is recognized as Uganda's smallest savannah national park, covering a compact yet highly diverse area of 260 square kilometers in the western region, conveniently located near the highway to the country's major western parks. Uniquely characterized by its sculpted landscape of rolling hills, open acacia woodlands, and a series of five lakes (of the 13 in the greater wetland system) that sustain its wildlife year-round, it offers a distinct contrast to the dense forests and vast plains of other reserves. The park is celebrated for hosting large herds of Burchell's zebra and the country's only populations of Impala and the majestic Eland (the world's largest antelope), which thrive alongside Topi, Buffalo, and recently re-introduced Rothschild's Giraffe. Furthermore, Lake Mburo is one of the few places in Uganda that permits unique, immersive safari experiences, allowing visitors to get closer to nature through guided walking safaris on foot, horseback riding safaris (the only park offering this activity), and cycling safaris, which are safe due to the absence of lions and elephants. The park's aquatic habitats and fringing wetlands also attract over 350 bird species, notably including the rare and elusive African Finfoot and the Papyrus Gonolek, making a boat cruise on Lake Mburo another essential activity.
